OVERVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY DIVISION, BARI
Entomology Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) is responsible for crop protection related research and development works of BARI mandated crops. However, keeping pace with our “National Agriculture policy 2018”, 8th five year plan and “Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 2)” presently our main research thrust is to protect the BARI mandated crops from devastating insect pest attack economically and in a sustainable manner by developing bio-rational based management packages thereby ensuring food safety.
Widespread use of broad-spectrum chemical pesticides has revolutionized pest management. Severe adverse effects of pesticides on the environment, problems of resistance reaching crisis proportions, and public protests have driven demand for alternative pest control tactics. With advances in the development of biorational pesticides and other selective chemistries, there is now real opportunity to realize the biorational pest management. With above perspectives, Entomology Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) has conducted different entomological researches. New generation biopesticides, biorational, new smart pest management options/devices, new molecule less toxic insecticides were included in the experimentations. From the research results, some excellent biorational based pest management technologies of different vegetables have been developed. Farmers’ will be benefitted from these technologies which inturn would help increasing safe and nutritious vegetables production.
